Best days ahead for historic Hastings high street

LOCAL COMMUNITY leaders should bid for government cash to help sustain our historic high streets, Hastings MP Amber Rudd has urged.

The government is making £675 million available through the new funds to increase access to high streets, reduce traffic congestion and support the high street to adapt to meet the changing expectations as consumers shop more online.

Local authorities have now been invited to set out the challenges facing their high street and town centre and what they’d like to do to change these. The government will then assess these before deciding which plans to move forward with.

Amber Rudd MP said:

“Our historic high streets and town centres are not only crucial to our local economy but they lie at the heart of our communities.

“They attract tourists, provide a family friendly environment for local people and we must take all action possible to support our local high streets.

“This money will not only protect our high street stores but enhance them and make our beautiful high streets fit for the future.

“I will work closely with our local authorities and do urge them to bid for money so our high street continues to thrive.”

The Government’s Plan for the High Street includes action to help small Hastings retailers by cutting business rates.

Amber was pleased to receive an update on plans from James Brokenshire MP, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
